El Palau is the Catalan word for palace. The inhabitants of the town of Terrateig always called this country house of the barons of Terrateig a palace-home. This stately 3-storey cube house was built in the first half of the 14th century, although the original building dates back to the 9th century. Various renovations from the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century have shaped the current building. For intersted parties there is an extensive history of the house available.
“El Palau” was acquired by the current owners in 1991 and restored with dignity and success. They ran a very successful restaurant there until 2002, with a loyal crowd of visitors even from Valencia city.
Access to “El Palau” through the main entrance, with a spacious entrance flanked by a historic arch, is inviting us to enter the patio and garden. In this entrance we also find rooms on both sides with stately doors, one of which is a storage room and the other is used for storing firewood. Once on the patio we reach the former restaurant, it is now a very spacious living room (about 120 m2) with a stone fireplace, bar and toilets. It offers a view of the garden, formed around two Gothic arches, and the countryside.
Next to this we find the kitchen, very comfortable and spacious, fully equipped, also located under an original arch. The living room next to the kitchen is a very special space as there are two oil tanks from the time of the Arab occupation. and another half horseshoe shaped arch, as a witness to what must have been an ancient Arabian window.
The first floor is reached by a staircase, we find here three bedrooms, all with beautiful views of the mountains or the garden itself. The main bedroom has, in addition to two walk-in closets and an en-suite bathroom, two balconies with garden views and two windows with mountain views. The other bedroom, also with its own bathroom, is spacious with a window to the garden and access to the terrace. Finally, the third bedroom is a well-used space designed for children or young people. It consists of a ground floor and a loft, and also has a private bathroom.
On the top floor of the house there is a fourth studio, with panoramic views and there is another spacious room with a high ceiling and also a beautiful view.
